ChatGPT and NotebookLM for Therapists: Practical Ways to Use Both
If you’ve been curious about how AI can actually support you as a therapist, this episode will give you real examples you can relate to. In this episode of Run Your Private Practice with AI, I’m sharing two powerful AI experiences from my own week that completely shifted how I think about what’s possible right now.
One involves using ChatGPT in a way I never expected during an emergency room visit, and the other is a deep dive into Google’s free research tool, NotebookLM. Together, ChatGPT and NotebookLM show just how practical, accessible, and supportive AI can be for therapists in everyday situations, both professionally and personally.
AI Tips You Don’t Want to Miss:
- How ChatGPT group chats allow multiple people to collaborate inside one shared conversation.
- A real-life example of using ChatGPT to analyze information and think alongside doctors in real time.
- How NotebookLM can deep research therapy topics like cognitive distortions in minutes.
- Turning research into slides, mind maps, infographics, podcasts, and explainer videos.
- Creative ways therapists can use AI-generated resources for groups, workshops, and education.

[00:00:00] Hey everybody. I always pop in once a week to update you on AI stuff and what’s going on in my world with AI and all that stuff. So much is happening with ai. I don’t even know where to start.
[00:00:10] I mean, I feel like I could talk for two hours about everything that’s even happened this week with ai, but there are two things that I myself did this week that I thought might help somebody else. first, if you’re using ChatGPT, and you might’ve heard about this, but ChatGPT has released the ability to have group chats inside of ChatGPT.
[00:00:29] So, now you can go when you’re in a chat and there’s a little share button at the top where you can just kind of click it, click it down, and you can add people to it. So. I did it on my phone and it dropped down and I clicked, and I could add, you know, people that I’d been texting with, which happened to be my mom, my sisters, my boyfriend.
[00:00:47] I added all of them to a chat. And I’ll tell you a little bit about that in a minute. But it’s super cool ’cause you can do this with your virtual assistant or people on your team or you know, any, anybody that you wanna share a chat with and you can interact with it together. So this is, I don’t wanna like freak anybody out, but I ended up, I actually went to the emergency room on Monday.
[00:01:07] I had, I was just. Chilling on the couch like it was like one o’clock on Monday. I was just sitting there and all of a sudden I felt this like severe pain in the right side of my body and I was like, oh my God. And it just like felt like an explosion and I was like, oh, this is not good. So I laid there for a little while.
[00:01:23] My boyfriend was at the gym. He came back and I was like, I’ve got a bad pain in my side. And I was like, do we have a thermometer? And he found the thermometer. ’cause we live out of our suitcases, so everything’s like, it’s hard to find stuff sometimes. But anyway, so I had like a low grade fever in this really bad pain.
[00:01:37] Of course I’m ChatGPTing, like what could be wrong with me? And of course ChatGPT’s like, it could be appendix. Your appendix, right? So I’m like, oh my gosh. So anyway, we went to the emergency room and. You know, I wanted to tell my sisters and everybody I’m like, oh my gosh, I’m having this pain, you know? So anyway, I told everybody and I’m sitting in there and I’m like, oh yeah, ChatGPT lets you do a group chat.
[00:01:57] So I shared my chat where I was like. Chatting with ChatGPT about possible appendicitis and all this stuff and it’s amazing. So everybody got brought into the conversation and then my sisters, who one of my sisters uses ChatGPT a lot too. She started asking ChatGPT questions and I was asking questions.
[00:02:14] And then, you know, when you’re in the emergency room, right, they give you a portal and you can log into the portal. And anytime you have a test, they release the results inside of the portal so you can see them immediately. I learned this with my dad when he was in the hospital just to go look at the portal instead of waiting for like the doctor to come around like three hours later and tell you what’s going on so you can actually pull your live re results off of the medical portals and the hospitals, especially in the er.
[00:02:40] So anyway, I’m pulling my results off of. The portal, like first they did labs. So I pull the labs and I take a screenshot and I pop them into the ChatGPT thread with everybody else, and it’s like, here’s my labs. What do you think this means? And ChatGPT is like, well, this is a little elevated, that’s a little low.
[00:02:57] You’ve got some of this, some of that. And it’s like analyzing in real time. And then it’s like saying, this is what I think the doctor would say. And then my sister who’s like, you know. She loves to investigate stuff, so she’s asking questions of Chatt. So we’re all in this thread. And Chatt is responding to my sister, like she goes by nickname.
[00:03:15] So it’s calling her her nickname on there. And then my mom says something and is saying something to my mom, like, it’s talking to all of us in this chat thread. It is freaking amazing. So then of course they did like, a CT and the CT came back and said something. So I uploaded the CT report. So this went on for like, I don’t know, four or five hours.
[00:03:33] Basically just all these reports. They did an ultrasound, all of this. Anyway, it turns out it’s, and I hope this isn’t TMI, but it turns out it’s like I have a history of ovarian cyst and it turns out and ovarian cyst like burst, which I’ve had before, but this was like. Different. Like, this hurt so bad, it turns out that’s what it was.
[00:03:50] Anyway, so even in the reports it’s like, well her appendix is a little bit inflamed, but we’ve got this report and that, and the whole time ChatGPT is like analyzing what the ER doctor would be thinking could be wrong with me. So ChatGPT was like, oh, the doctor’s probably gonna come back and recommend this and that, and here’s what you should do about that.
[00:04:07] And it, it was just amazing. So that’s a use case. Of the group chat feature inside of ChatGPT. If you haven’t tried it yet, it’s pretty awesome. Like you could bring your VA in, you could bring like let’s say that you wanna upload your policy and procedure manual, right? To ChatGPT. You just upload it in the main chat and then enable group chat with all of maybe your group practice members.
[00:04:32] If there. Or therapist or your admin team or whatever, if they’re using ChatGPT, you bring ’em in, add ’em in, and then they can consult the manual. But you can also see like what they’re saying, like you can go in and read the chats. It’ll notify you that there’s a new message inside of the chat. And. You know, you could see like what questions are they asking about the policy and procedure manual or whatever this SOP is I put in here.
[00:04:53] Or maybe you uploaded a new training that you wanted them to watch you upload the PowerPoint with a link and say, I want y’all to watch this and comment back what you think. Or, you know, for professors, I mean, there’s so many ways to do this. Like even as I’m using it in the emergency room with this pain, I’m like, this is.
[00:05:09] Freaking amazing. Like I’m just thinking of all the use cases for this. So it’s pretty cool. And then you can, you can like do the ible and pull in your, your custom gpt that you’ve built up. You guys know I’m huge on custom gpt. Pull them into the conversation, consult the GPT based on what you’re talking about.
[00:05:26] Or your team could do that. I mean, it’s just, my mind was like blown using this thing. So it was pretty awesome. And at the end of the day, ChatGPT was right. It, you know, it looked like appendicitis. It could have been, but there a lot of the like blood work and all that wasn’t exactly pointing to that.
[00:05:43] And it, and then at the end of the day, the doctor was like, yeah, I want you to just go see an ob. It looks like you had an ovarian cyst explode inside of you and you’ve got another one in there that you probably need to take care of. So, you know, based on the ultrasound and everything. They referred me to an ob and ChatGPT was like right on board with that.
[00:06:00] And was so encouraging ’cause they like gave me morphine, you know, for the pain, like a little bit of morphine and ChatGPT was like, okay, now how are you, how are you feeling? Like it actually like checked in to see how I was feeling after they gave it to me. Anyway, the whole thing was crazy and surreal and it’s just the beginning, you know, who knows where this thing’s gonna be down the road.
[00:06:18] So that happened this week. And then what was the other thing I wanted? Oh, notebook, lm. You guys have heard me talk about Notebook, lm I recorded a tutorial video. If you’re in the clinical AI club, I’m going to put a tutorial video in there for you guys to see. Just. All the things you can do with Notebook lm, it’s free, it’s, it’s google dot notebook lm.com I think.
[00:06:41] But if you just go like Search Notebook lm, you’ll find it. So inside of Notebook, lm, I decided, I was like, okay, I’m just gonna pick like a therapist use case for this and see what happens. So I, you can go in there and you can go to like the chat box, a notebook el and you can say, like. I wanna research, I did cognitive distortions, like, like let’s say I am like a co, A CBT therapist, cognitive behavioral therapist. And I was like, okay, I wanna research cognitive distortions and get all the research on it. So I in notebook, lm, you put in your prompt. You can make it super robust if you want to, or just like easy like that.
[00:07:18] Like I wanna research cognitive distortions. I’m a therapist that specializes in CBT or something. Do the dropdown and you do deep research. So I did that. It took about. I don’t know, like four or five minutes or something like that came back and it had pulled like, I think it was over 25 sources of cognitive distortions and how to like overcome your cognitive distortions.
[00:07:40] So it pulled YouTube videos, research papers, all this stuff. It pulls it into what they call your notebook in notebook, lm, and then. After it’s pulled it, then you could interact with this information, which is so amazing to me.
[00:07:53] You go over to it and basically it gives you all these different ways to consume this information. So think about this from a therapist perspective, but also as a human perspective, like how it can help you, but how it can help your clients. So you click on the next tab and it gives you all these options.
[00:08:10] This is the free version, the paid version has got even more. ’cause I saw somebody else do a tutorial on it. The paid version has even more options, but you click over and it’s like, okay, how do you wanna consume this information? You could turn it into a slideshow and in the, if you’re in the clinical AI club, I’m gonna put this slideshow in that this thing made for me in eight minutes.
[00:08:29] Uses Google’s Nana Banana. Now that is, it makes perfect slides. So I told us to take all the information that I, you know, had deep researched on cognitive distortions and how to help my clients overcome them. And I clicked slides and about eight minutes later I had a 14 page slide deck that was. A perfect demonstration of what a cognitive distortion is and how to overcome it.
[00:08:55] So for therapists, right, you could take this. Slide deck and go propose to people like, Hey, I wanna come teach your corporate entity about, about cognitive distortions and how to help. You could even do the same process and say, you know, this is the company I wanna teach it to. I want you to pull up, you know, all the information, deep research all the information about them as well, and make a slide so show on cognitive distortions that would apply to their business.
[00:09:21] Right. Click the button. Google’s nano banana, which is their image creation feature that they’ve just released. That is gonna blow your mind. If you haven’t played with it yet, you’ve gotta go play with it. It created a perfect slideshow for me. And you download it. You can upload in Google Slides or wherever you want, download it as A-P-P-T-X, you know, like a PowerPoint presentation format, and you had these slides.
[00:09:45] Every word was spelled correctly. Images drawn by Nana Banana. Perfect. And it, it did the whole presentation on how to overcome cognitive dis distortions. So. Okay. So that’s just one thing it does, and this is free. Okay, so I did that. And then the other thing I did with, they have something called a mind map in there.
[00:10:04] So you can mind map this thing. So let’s say you’re on a telehealth call and you wanna pull up the whiteboard in there, in one of your telehealth calls or zoom or something. You wanna pull it up and you, or share your screen. Share your screen with this mind map thing. So the mind map starts with the core tenets of cognitive distortions, and then they’ve got the little arrow.
[00:10:21] So you click the arrow and it opens up into a new mind map and it, it like expands upon that arrow and it goes on and on and on. And I mean, I deep dove into this just by using this mind map feature that’s like real time and you can like communicate with and chat with it to change it up however you want to.
[00:10:38] So that was the mind map. And then what was the other thing I did? Oh, oh, infographics. It uses nano banana. The Google image creator for infographics. So I said, now I want you to create an amazing infographic that simulates what I’m talking, what I’m talking about, and I’ll put it down under this video so you guys can see what it looks like.
[00:10:58] It’s incredible. It’s like every detail and it’s like, it’s like engaging. It’s interesting. So imagine if you put that on your website, if you’re like, oh, I specialize in cognitive distortions. Or even if you wanted it to be like like if you wanted to make a course about this, you just put that graphic on there.
[00:11:12] The graphic is super interesting and engaging, and I’ll again, I’ll put it down under underneath so you guys can see it. And if you’re in the clinical AI club, I’m gonna put. The presentation and the slide or the infographic and the mind map, just so you can see how this works. ’cause it’s so freaking cool.
[00:11:28] But this is all free and there’s other things you can do in there too. You can make like flashcards, like let’s say you work with kids or, and you wanna like. A group therapy with kids or something, right? You wanna create these flashcards. You create the flashcards and just do it in the group setting.
[00:11:42] I mean, the, the, the use cases for this just really blows my mind. You can make it into a podcast. Some of y’all may or may not know that about Google Notebook. That’s always been there, the notebook l where you can just click and they take the content, you can give directions, they take the content, and it’s a very engaging podcast.
[00:11:59] We can’t use our voices in there yet. But it’s two voices. They go back and forth. That’s a woman and a man, and it’s, it sounds just like a professional podcast, so you could make many lessons for your clients. On different topics if you wanted to. They like podcasts, you could just, it takes two seconds and it turns it into a perfect podcast.
[00:12:17] You could turn it into an explainer video, so it’ll make a very awesome video of like. And you could choose the different styles of video you want, like animated or like, professional, like you could pick all the different styles, click the button and it makes a video. You can go pop it on your YouTube channel and have that as your content on your YouTube channel.
[00:12:37] You specialized in something. You could make a million of these. Explainer videos are for your YouTube channel that are super engaging and literally all of this is free. You can download any of it. You can upload it anywhere else. It does have a little stamp on it that says notebook lm, which is fine. To me anyway, it’s fine.
[00:12:52] So anyway, that’s. My week in AI and all the things I did. So I hope you find that helpful and interesting. If you have any questions about it, let me know. Of course, I’ll put links down below so you can go find the stuff. But it’s notebook, LM by Google. And then obviously just ChatGPT, the group setting, the group threads that you can do now, which is just really cool.
[00:13:14] So. If you watch this later, let me know if you have questions. Have a great day and great weekend. Talk to you later. Bye.
