AI Prompts:
- Prompt Generator for Expressive Arts Exercises
“You are an art therapist planning a session for a client who struggles with emotional expression. Give me 10 creative and emotionally evocative visual art prompts that can help them explore feelings like anxiety, sadness, resilience, and hope. Each prompt should be imaginative, metaphor-based, and include a short sentence explaining the purpose of the prompt. Make them suitable for teens and adults.” - Narrative Processing After Art-Making
“I just facilitated an art therapy session where the client drew a chaotic, swirling ocean with a small boat in the center. Give me 10 open-ended, trauma-informed reflection questions I could ask the client to help them explore the meaning behind their image. Avoid diagnostic language. Use soft, exploratory language that invites storytelling and symbolism.” - AI-Generated Art as a Catalyst
“I’m planning to use AI-generated images in an art therapy session. Generate 10 imaginative prompts I could feed into a text-to-image tool like Midjourney or DALL·E to create abstract or symbolic artwork that invites emotional exploration. Themes should include: identity, protection, inner conflict, healing, and transformation. Each prompt should be visually rich and open to interpretation.” - Thematic Tracking & Session Inspiration
“I’m an art therapist reviewing themes from past client sessions (no PHI). The client often draws mazes, cages, and disconnected body parts. Based on these recurring symbols, suggest 5 new directions I could explore with this client in future sessions. Include suggested art prompts, metaphor-based questions, and potential therapeutic themes like autonomy, trauma containment, or disconnection. Keep it exploratory and symbolic, not diagnostic.” - Creative Business & Content Tools for Art Therapists
“I’m an art therapist creating a lead magnet to grow my email list. I want a free PDF called ‘5 Expressive Art Prompts to Calm Your Nervous System.’ Write the 5 prompts in a warm, calming tone suitable for adults. Include a short, encouraging explanation for each one and a suggested medium (like watercolor, collage, or pencil). Make it beautiful, emotionally supportive, and easy to follow.”

[00:00:00] Hi, it’s Kym and welcome back to Run Your Private Practice with AI. Today i’ve got something fun and totally different for you, especially if you’re into art therapy, expressive arts, or honestly just love getting creative with your sessions. There’s this idea I came across recently, that art therapists could team up with AI to create more meaningful imaginative experiences for clients.
[00:00:23] And I thought, wait, yeah, we don’t talk about that enough. I was also reading a research article that involved using AI to support art therapy for trauma patients in an inpatient setting, which got me thinking about it as well.
[00:00:34] So this episode is all about five totally HIPAA safe wildly creative ways that art therapists and really any expressive therapist can use AI tools like chatGPT in their work. And don’t worry, I’m giving you the exact prompts you can try out and test today. Let’s get into it.
[00:00:53] First, you can generate unique art prompts without the brain fog. You know those days when your brain just won’t come up with one more meaningful art prompt you’ve already used “draw your safe place” like 10 times. This is where chatGPT can be your co-creative partner. Here’s your prompt. You are an art therapist planning a session for a client who struggles with emotional expression.
[00:01:15] Give me 10 creative and emotionally evocative visual art prompts that can help them explore feelings like anxiety, sadness, resilience, and hope. Each prompt should be imaginative, metaphor based, and include a short sentence explaining the purpose of the prompt. Make them suitable for teens and adults. This is perfect to use when you’re prepping a group or individual session. It’s such a time saver, and it helps keep things fresh and meaningful.
[00:01:45] Second, you can ask better questions after the art is made. You’ve just finished a powerful art making session. Your client drew something really compelling. Maybe a storm, a tangled web, a broken bridge, but now you’re sitting there thinking, okay, how do I guide them through this without leading? This prompt will help you generate reflection questions that go deep without diagnosing or analyzing.
[00:02:08] I just facilitated an art therapy session where the client drew a chaotic swirling ocean with a small boat in the center. Give me 10 open-ended trauma-informed reflection questions I could ask the client to help them explore the meaning behind their image. Avoid diagnostic language. Use soft exploratory language that invites storytelling and symbolism. Save this one in your note favorites. It’s honestly going to be one of my go-to prompt styles for narrative processing.
[00:02:35] Third, you can use AI generated art to spark something new. Not all clients come in ready to create from scratch. Some feel blocked, some are overwhelmed. One clever workaround. Let the image come first with a text to image AI tool like Dal E or Midjourney. You can create abstract or symbolic art ahead of time and invite the client to respond to it like, which one of these Dreamscapes feels like your internal world today? Pick an image and title it.
[00:03:02] Here’s your prompt to generate those types of visuals. I’m planning to use AI generated images in an art therapy session, generate 10 imaginative prompts. I could feed into a text to image tool, like Mid Journey or Dally to create abstract or symbolic artwork that invites emotional exploration. Themes should include identity protection, inner conflict, healing, and transformation. Each prompt should be visually rich and open to interpretation. Clients don’t need to like the image. The goal is to react to it. That reaction is the processing.
[00:03:36] Another idea is to track theme client art without overthinking it. As therapists, we sometimes notice patterns in a client’s creations, but it can be hard to organize those observations into a meaningful arc. AI can help you step back and ask what’s showing up over time?
[00:03:53] Here’s a prompt that does exactly that. I’m an art therapist reviewing themes from past client sessions. No, PHI. The client often draws mazes, cages, and disconnected body parts. Based on these recurring symbols, suggest five new directions I could explore with this client. In future sessions include suggested art prompts, metaphor based questions, and potential therapeutic themes like autonomy, trauma, containment, or disconnection. Keep it exploratory and symbolic, not diagnostic, even if you’re not doing full session reviews. This is gold for session planning or clinical supervision.
[00:04:29] And lastly, you can create beautiful content for your practice. Let’s say you wanna grow your email list, you could create a free PDF with soothing expressive prompts to help people regulate their nervous systems.
[00:04:41] Here’s a prompt that will literally write it for you. I’m an art therapist creating a lead magnet to grow my email list. I want a free PDF called five Expressive Art Prompts to calm your nervous System. Write the five prompts in a warm, calming tone suitable for adults. Include a short, encouraging explanation for each one and a suggested medium like watercolor, collage, or pencil.
[00:05:03] Make it beautiful, emotionally supportive, and easy to follow. You can pair it with Canva, drop it on your site, and boom, your content is now helping people before they even walk into a session.
[00:05:15] So those are your five creative, ethical, AI powered ways to bring a little magic into your art therapy work. If you try any of these, DM me, I would love to hear how it went.
[00:05:27] And if you want these prompts in a neat little bundle, check the show notes. Until next time, this is Kym helping you run your private practice with AI one creative prompt at a time.
